A new Word of the Week and The Phantom Tollbooth

My class looked at tollbooth as the word of the week this week. I selected this word as I had decided to read The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster to them. It was interesting to find out who knew about tollbooths. For most of them they had only met something like this at a carpark rather than as part of a road system.

I loved the book when I first read it years ago and enjoy sharing it with classes. Sometimes I will read the whole story but I have also found that reading an extract is a great way to grab the attention of a class. The chapters about Digitopolis can create a great deal of interest about investigating number and maths.

So far the class met the main character, Milo, the Whether Man, the Lethargians, Tock and has just entered Dictionopolis.

Have you read The Phantom Tollbooth?
